OEM vs ODM: What to Prepare Before Requesting a Quote

Choose a practical development route, then prepare the information needed for a useful quotation.

Start with the product you need

OEM and ODM labels can mean different things between suppliers. A more useful starting point is to identify the product, the design information already available and the development work still needed. Tell the manufacturer whether you want an existing model adapted for your brand or a product developed around a new brief.

HOLYTACHI offers customization of existing models and new product development. The scope should be written down before price, timing or deliverables are compared. This helps buyers compare the development work included rather than judging proposals by the label alone.

Define an existing-model project

For an existing product, separate each requested change. A logo, housing colour, accessory set and printed box are different items; they may involve different approval steps and minimum quantities. A familiar-looking model does not mean every change is already available.

  • List the model and the configuration shown in the reference.
  • Specify logo position, colour references, accessories and packaging.
  • Ask which changes need a new sample or technical review.

Prepare a new-development brief

For a new product, explain its intended use, required functions, preferred size and target cost. Share sketches, drawings or reference products with notes explaining what each reference is intended to illustrate. State which inputs you can provide and which design, electronics, tooling or prototype work you expect from the manufacturer.

Agree in writing on project responsibilities, design deliverables, tooling arrangements and any confidentiality or intellectual-property terms. The OEM or ODM label alone does not settle these matters.

Compare quotations on the same basis

Give each supplier the same brief, target market and estimated quantity. Compare the quoted product configuration, development charges, sample scope, packaging, testing documents and trade terms. Ask which items are included and which remain subject to review.

Before proceeding, record the approved specification, sample acceptance criteria and next approval stage. Confirm minimum quantities and lead times for the actual project rather than treating a general website figure as a final commitment.
